Hodges' voice and the visuals of his story makes it very comprehensible. He gives you not only life lessons but also tips to bet your self. I learned that no matter the situation you are placed in, still trust yourself and keep a positive outlook on every situation.
This book might be for you if: You are needing a major dose of "get up and do something" You are a millennial interested in leaving a legacy and thinking about your future. If you feel like you are stuck in a decision-making process and need clarity about your ability to get it done. If you want to learn about how stocks, bonds, and other financial aspects of the housing market works. Even though I read the book in less than 48 hours, I have since then gone back to the book several times as a reference for decisions I am currently making right now.
This book is simply an incredible source of knowledge and inspiration. We can all learn something from this story. When purpose and your passion collide, you become a very contagious source of success. However, it first has to start with believing and betting on yourself. You can start that today by taking and posting a selfie telling the world how awesome you are and what you have done. Start being the best version of you, as you continue to evolve into the person that you were meant to be.
Accept nothing less than your personal best. Only you know what that is. Keep the circle of people around you tight. Make sure they have your best interest at heart and are going to pull out the best parts of you. I've heard this before and never cared about the saying until I looked around and the people who I cling to are the ones that push me forward personally and professionally. My closest friends are very real and will tell me the TRUTH with a side of humor every phone conversation we have.
That is what this book is about; Dr. Hodges sharing his truth. His failures, successes, and the lessons learned along the way are all tied into this story. This story is certainly worth reading. Those painful moments of losing in a big way was a wake-up call of our lives where we learn what real strength is to endure, and the true definition of success: It is the commitment to yourself to believe above and beyond where you are in a much larger way.
As you read this book, it will expose yourself to be around good thinkers such as Dr. When I got a hold of it, I could not put it down! Personally, I read it in its entirety in one sitting and was exposed to good input! Vernard Hodges laid the foundation of his upbringing to demonstrate influential factors that triggered the epitome of success in many aspects! Presently, the great thing about this book is its strategic timing that will ultimately assist us in understanding the future rhetoric for success!
All professionals in diverse sectors should read this book! Additionally, I recommend this book to all young people. Unquestionably, this book will change your thinking; moreover, change your life! Hodges harnesses creative thinking at its best by giving us all a blueprint to follow.
The true joy is creating, not maintaining. Undoubtedly, the reflection of his ability to think extraordinarily out of the box to bet on oneself to create the success you really deserve! View 1 comment. Feb 07, Bonnie Pierovich rated it it was amazing.
Great book with very useful, practical information This was an excellent book. Hodges clearly wants his readers to become financially independent, along with being socially responsible. He starts the book by telling his story; how and where he was raised; who his mentors were; and how he struggled to get a good education.
He admits he was not a good student, but through hard work he was able to graduate college and become a successful veterinarian. He also tells how he learned to invest in re Great book with very useful, practical information This was an excellent book. He also tells how he learned to invest in real estate and the stock market. The book is clearly not written by a polished author.
His personal story is sometimes choppy. But Mr. Hodges doesn't claim to be an author. What I really loved about this book was how Mr Hodges explained in simple terms things like how to set up a business partnership versus LLC versus corporation ; what to do before buying your first house; basic terminology you need to know before investing in the stock market; and other business matters. Hodges openly shares his failures and mistakes along with his successes.
For example he tells the story of how he invested in some very lucrative stocks Priceline and Amazon were two of them. He made a million dollars. Then lost the entire million, also in the stock market. And he ends his book with how important it is to give back to your community.
I also appreciate that Mr Hodges acknowledges and names his mentors and the people that have helped him become a success. Again, this was a great book. I highly recommend it. Dec 19, Natalie T rated it it was amazing.

Besides sharing the past, which could have ended his life before it even started, and sharing the present, which includes even now, dreams for the future, Dr.
Hodges includes a wealth of information about entrepreneurship. Many financial books start at a place beyond where the person with no financial knowledge or background could even start. He describes not a bullet-point plan to success, but rather a lifestyle of positivity, work ethic, looking forward and reaching back, and then shows how all this has worked together for his success.
I will have my young adult children read this book, and I do hope it inspires them to always work hard, help others, and to, of course, bet on themselves. Feb 15, Thomas rated it it was amazing. This book is easily one of my favorite motivational works. From his easy to approach tone, Dr.
Hodges writing voice is honest, inspirational, and concise. It is this method of addressing the reader I found so appealing. Without hesitation, Bet On Yourself is unapologetic in its desire to educate the public of their financial capabilities. By sharing his own experiences and truths, I was able to better comprehend my own monetary potential and what changes I can start making today.
This isn't a "ge This book is easily one of my favorite motivational works. This isn't a "get rich quick" book. It is a man's desire to relate to the "everyday" working man in order to find identity with what drives us. By tapping into that enthusiasm, business opportunities become apparent in order to break the cycle of living pay check to paycheck.
Hodges de-mystifies the stock exchange, how to find other forms of revenue, and to keep networking in a consistent manner. These may seem obvious and spoken about exhaustively in other texts but Hodges has a charm and transparency that lends it more weight and validity. This book fired me up. With a genuine desire to share his knowledge, Bet On Yourself is a real treat to consume in one sitting.
Feb 04, Sheri Toyosi rated it it was amazing. It is not a get rich quick book; the writer rather highlights his many successes in life. The author describes mistakes made and how to avoid pitfalls. Slightly digressing from his personal story, the author also describes investment strategies in detail; albeit at a beginners level, highlighting pros and cons.
The book delves into the nitty gritty of real estate investing and answers questions potential investors might have. Any reader interested in financial success will find this book highly engaging and useful as a hands-on guide to wealth management. Feb 21, Anthony Okanlawon rated it it was amazing. In his book, Dr. Hodges is transparent, real and straight to the point. I enjoyed the book because it was relatable on many levels, his humble background, making it to college and initially not understanding what his pathway was but associated with the right people who helped steer his course.

With no idea of who Dr. Hodges is, I had no expectation when I opened the book. It was there that I started to appreciate reading. As a young girl who once had terrible eczema, I figured I'd find my friend in books. I enjoyed reading and falling into this world where who I was, and any problems I faced disappeared. I would read anywhere: the school bus, the laundry mat, and the grocery store. I was bumping into people and while my mama was fussed about me reading and walking at the same time.
Or trying to read during after bed hours in a half-lit room. In the midst of my now "busier life", I decided that I should get back to doing the thing that I love so much something I used to walk around doing as a child. It's also one of the reasons I think I am an OK writer. My current focus is on reading about ways I can improve myself and my quality life.
I love books that inspire me and help me to become the best version of myself possible. It's just something that used to be a leisure but I need to make a priority again. Libraries still exist, and the books are free to read. Although we have gotten so advanced that we can read on our phones and computers, I still prefer to order the hard copy of books.
It's something about holding it in your hand, flipping the pages, and feeling the cover. I don't know, maybe that's just me. My most recent read is a book by a veterinarian by trade, Dr. Vernard L. In this book, he discussed how he took his life that started from small beginnings and so much out of so little. Although the book is over pages, It took me a total of 2 days to finish it.
Hodges' voice and the visuals of his story makes it very comprehensible. He gives you not only life lessons but also tips to bet your self. I learned that no matter the situation you are placed in, still trust yourself and keep a positive outlook on every situation.

It was a good laugh throughout as well, even when things got serious, there was still humor Pros: This book has all the speed like a brand new sports car. It was a good laugh throughout as well, even when things got serious, there was still humor somewhere in there. You will enjoy this book and feel the fire and get to whatever your hearts desire. One last thing, "compassion" is a must and a great way to be towards any and everyone, preferably in the workplace or at home, so keep this in mind.
Cons: The language will surprise you, but I love the realness here. So, if you're sensitive to profanity, then this will shock you a little bit. However, if you're a fan a Russel Simmons, then you already know what it is. Also, it was confusing to learn who was narrating. I wondered if one sister was speaking about the other, but then the name would change again, and this made it difficult to follow.
Overall: Good book that should be added to your arsenal when it comes to business. Oct 15, May Ling rated it it was amazing Shelves: personal. I was not expecting to like this book as much as I did. It is not just a book for women and minorities looking for advice on how to success.
A lot of what they have to say works for anyone. Their ideas of networking, building your tribe speak to me in a way that a lot of hokey books have not. First, the entire section on friendship, how you should be deliberate about it is the theme of this year.
One of my friends just finished a seminar she's giving in China on this topic. We spoke extensively a I was not expecting to like this book as much as I did. We spoke extensively about it. These ladies did a similarly excellent job, though from a slightly different perspective.
It is something so few talk about. While people understand that you don't get to the top by yourself, they often don't understand the details of why it is there are great people surrounding those that are successful. This talks to the basics of it. Similarly, I love the way they talk about being a boss lady or a boss, period. The idea that it's just this selfish, hard exterior, cold person is missing everything.
Empathy - as they mention - is core and cultivated as a skill. But you still got to make decisions. More importantly, the empathy informs the decisions. That's why I think it's so crazy when people criticize boss ladies self. But in fact, the art of decision making is actually knowing there is a decision to make in the first place. And you're doing this as mentioned in the middle chapters that also talk about the awesome Ms.
You got to show up and lead. Also, the whole stuff on Status Quo. Know it before you break it, but break it I am soooo with you. I have always excelled by carving out my own space. I would add SOOOO many fights with others in my career have been about people forcing me to compete in the exact same way. I'll lose.
I know I'll lose. And what the heck is the point. Compete in my own area grows the firm and is less likely to experience external competition. But part of the haters has to do with the fact they are fighting you here. That whole part was helpful in solidifying my understanding of the dynamic of why Status Quo is so frighting to others vs. I love the format of the book with downloads. One of my top self-help books this year for sure!

Options were limited for people growing up in Dr. The first part of this book shows how a poor African American kid failing in high school became a business owner and a respected veterinarian.
Hodges stresses the importance of making friends wherever you go, and more. Getting fired from his first professional job was a blessing. It taught him to bet on himself, and he never looked back. Why should you read this book? I wrote it to give hope, knowledge, and encouragement to people with limited options. I learned early that school wasn't set up for people like me to succeed. You have to scratch and claw to educate yourself. Refuse to be a victim of your surroundings.
Get up every time life knocks you down. Refuse to take no for an answer. Never quit, despite how hard life gets. If you're going to do well in life, bet on yourself, because if you don't, then who will? Growing up in a rural Georgia trailer park we had very little. Our options were limited. My friends and I all dreamed of becoming superstar athletes or famous rappers. But most of us ultimately went into the military, labored at the local bus factory, went to jail, or got killed.
My story is different. This book is my story of how I bet on myself, and the lessons I learned. How I overcame huge obstacles to live the life. I was a smart kid, but not "school smart. And then there are the smarts my friends and I used growing up in the rural south to overcome a common perception that we weren't good enough. I was a failing student in high school. I became a community leader and philanthropist.
I taught myself to become a successful real-estate entrepreneur. I started with one single family home investment and turned it into a multi-million dollar real estate portfolio producing rents of over six figures monthly. In this book I show you how I did it, the method I used, and one you can use, too.
All young people struggle to know what to do with their lives. What's next? What am I gonna be? How do I get there? How do you know? What don't you know? If you're searching for the answers, I'll show you how I did it, and how you can live the life you deserve.
When I was young, I hung out with crack dealers in the bad part of town. I saw what "easy money" did to my community. It was easy come, easy go. That lifestyle never pans out for long. Nothing trumps hard work. Those who took the easy road had the nice clothes and cool cars.
They were popular with girls. It looked like they had it all figured out. To a teenage boy it was a glamorous lifestyle, but it didn't take long before I could see that lifestyle was a road to nowhere. In a small town like mine we thought our community was the world.
